Inside the rainforest in Cameroon live the Baka people, a ethnic group with a special sense of musicality. Africa owns an immense musical richness, that' s a fact...but there is something different about the pigmean : peculiar a capella voices and the water drumming.
This sound is created by slapping the water surface with the hands inside a pond or a river.
Often are coordinate women who beat the stream with cupped hands, each one with a different sound and creating a complex rhythm.
Thousands of miles away in the Pacific ocean ( Solomon Islands ) amazingly happens the same thing. Coincidence ?
Baka Beyond is the name of a group conceived in 1992 by british musicians Martin Cradick and Su Hart after a 6 week visit to Baka Forest people deep in the heart of the Cameroon rainforest.
They were struck by the Baka' s generosity of spirit and joy of life in hard circumstances which is reflected in their music. I highly recommend listening to their music inspired by them, specially a cd called " The meeting pool".
You can check this out in the following videos, including a Baka Beyond tune where you can find the amazing water drumming added in the final part of the track.
